On Tuesday, April 13, 2021, Major League Baseball Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. suffered an injury while playing against the Miami Marlins. Acuña Jr. was removed from the game in the bottom of the third inning after colliding with right fielder Starling Marte while both attempted to catch a fly ball.
The Braves medical staff initially diagnosed Acuña Jr. with a bruised lower back and lower abdominal wall contusion. However, Acuña Jr. underwent an MRI on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 and revealed the outfielder had sustained a left hip tendon strain. Although he is not expected to need surgery, Acuña Jr. is expected to miss at least six weeks, pushing his potential return date to mid-June 2021.
In the meantime, Acuña Jr. is progressing through treatment and recovery phase and is expected to return to action sooner than expected. According to Braves manager Brian Snitker, the star outfielder could be back in the lineup within the next four weeks.
Acuña Jr.’s injury is a major blow to the Braves’ roster. Before the injury, Acuña Jr. had recorded a batting average of .304 and 3 home runs with 18 RBIs. Acuña Jr. was off to a promising start in 2021 and was a key component of the Braves’ lineup.
Although the Braves will be without their star outfielder for the next several weeks, they have plenty of depth in the outfield to make up for Acuña Jr.’s absence. The Braves are confident that they will be able to continue the strong start to the season without their star outfielder and remain in contention for the division title.
