Prior to the California Primary 2022, this article writes that there have been many changes made to the California Primary ballot. The most significant change is the addition of a new “jungle primary,” which will allow voters to rank their top three favorite candidates, with the top two advancing to the general election in November.

The California Primary is the state’s primary election held on Tuesday, June 5, 2022. Voters in all 55 California congressional districts will cast ballots to determine who will represent them in the United States Congress.

Primary elections are an important part of American democracy, and they play a significant role in determining who will be elected to office in the US Senate and House of Representatives.

Ballot measures and candidates that receive a majority of votes in a given district are then declared victorious. If no candidate receives a majority of votes, then the two candidates who received the most votes in the district compete in a runoff election.

Democratic Primaries

  1. The California Democratic Party is holding its primary elections on Tuesday, June 5th. These primaries will determine who the party’s nominee will be for the November 6th general election.
  2. There are a total of 153 delegates up for grabs in the primary elections, with 48% of them allocated to candidates who receive at least 15% of the vote. The remaining 53% of delegates are allocated proportionally based on the vote totals from each district.
  3. In order to participate in the California Democratic Primary, citizens must register with a political party and then cast their ballots in accordance with that party’s guidelines. Voters who are not registered with a political party may still participate in the primary by voting for candidates who have endorsed by a registered party.
  4. Polling stations will open at 7am PDT on Tuesday and close at 8pm PDT that night. Results from all polling stations will be posted online within two hours of closing, and final results will be released shortly thereafter.

Republican Primaries

  1. The California Primary 2022: Full Coverage is the first of the three major U.S. political party primaries and takes place on Tuesday, June 7th.
  2. Registered Democrats and Republicans can vote in the California primary. Independents who are registered to vote in California can also participate in the primary, but they cannot choose which party to vote for.
  3. Voters who are registered with a political party can choose to vote in their party’s primary or cast a “no-vote”. A “no-vote” allows a voter to not participate in their party’s primary, but still cast a ballot in the general election.
  4. If you are registered with no political party, you are considered an “independent” and can choose which party to vote for in the California primary. If you are registered with more than one political party, you must select one and then cast your ballot for that party’s candidate in the California primary.
  5. If you are not registered to vote in California, you can still participate in the California primary by casting a ballot through absentee ballots or by voting in person on election day at your local polling station.
