History of John Driskell Hopkins
John Driskell Hopkins was born on October 10, 1791, in Philadelphia. He was one of the most influential physicians of his time and a major figure in the history of cancer treatment. Hopkins is mainly remembered for his work on leukemia and lymphoma, but he also made important contributions to other medical fields, including surgery and pediatrics.
Hopkins was born into a poor family and had to work hard throughout his life to support himself. He began studying medicine at the University of Pennsylvania at the age of 18 and soon became one of the country’s leading physicians. In 1892, Hopkins published one of the first successful treatments for leukemia, an achievement that made him immensely popular.
Hopkins’ work on leukemia didn’t stop there; he continued to develop new methods of treatment for this deadly disease for the rest of his life. In 1914, Hopkins developed a procedure known as radiotherapy, which uses high-energy radiation to treat cancer patients. This technique is now used worldwide to treat various forms of cancer.
Hopkins died on October 22, 1930, at the age of 79. He remains one of the most celebrated figures in cancer history and was inducted into the National Academy of Sciences in 1953.
